Köpenick

At home in the neighborhood

Slavic settlers christened this area “Kopanik” more than 1,200 years ago, meaning “settlement on a mound of earth”. As early as the 7th century, they had already set up their main castle on the site of today's palace island. The Dutch Baroque style palace, which was built between 1677- 1685 and still stands on the site to date, was extensively renovated in 2004 and has since become an iconic crowd puller. On the opposite site of the river Dahme lies the ‘Kietz’, the Köpenick neighbourhood which was founded as a Slavic fishing village and had its own independent city council until 1867. Fishermen's houses from the 18th century can still be seen and admired in the town today. Köpenick became world famous in 1906 when the shoemaker Friedrich Wilhelm Voigt, known as the “Captain of Köpenick”, occupied the town hall and robbed the city treasury. Since 1996, a statue outside the town hall reminds the community of the “Captain” and his rogue act.
